在 90 年月，那時還並沒有「狗狗日」的運動。遭到活動行銷傳奇 Bill Veeck 影響，芝加哥白襪隊那時的行銷副總 Rob Gallas 是第一名推廣這項運動的前驅。
在 ESPN 特派記者 Doug Williams 的報導中，談到那時罷工以後，亟欲找歸球迷的白襪隊球團所舉行的運動： “大眾In August 1996, the White Sox held a promotion called the Dog Days of Summer that allowed fans to bring their canine companions to New Comiskey Park and sit with them in the bleachers.”大眾

除了白襪隊的「仲夏狗之夜」以外，後來也有很多「狗狗日」的運動稱號，相稱乏味。像是「狗轟趴」”大眾Pooches in the Ball Park公眾、「狗狗趴」公眾Puppypalooza”大眾（公眾palooza”大眾 跟 “大眾party”大眾 同義）以及壓韻的「吠物趴」”大眾Bark in the Park”大眾。

那時尚未網路售票，但這項新聞一釋出，立即形成搶購門票的風潮。1998 年蒙特婁展覽會隊也仿照白襪隊的做法，徐徐地有愈來愈多球團跟進，成為球團行銷的根本手腕。
Williams 在報導中記載了那時 Gallas 規劃「狗狗日」的做法： “大眾So theynba 騎士好友圈 reserved about 500 seats in the bleachers, set up a ‘doggy comfort area’ with sod and fake fire hydrants, provided water stations, and had vendors with dog treats patrol the area.”大眾
「他們保留了約 籃球戰術500 個外野座席，設立了『有狗爽專區』，有草皮以及假的消防栓以及加水站，還有賣狗時的小販在方圓往返」 “大眾sod公眾「草皮」指的是切成一塊一塊可以移植的草，一般用 “大眾grass”大眾 來指「草」，而一大片「組合好的草皮」、「草坪」則是 “大眾lawn公眾。
